Every ordinary life story is extraordinary!

You just want to write your memoir.

You’d like to leave a record of your life for your family, to create a narrative in your own voice from the memories locked in  your own head. You’ve started to research this process, and you’re hitting roadblocks.

You’re unearthing rules and guidelines, do’s and don’ts, volumes of information carrying the warning: “What You Must Learn Before You Start Your Memoir!” Soon writing your memoir sounds terrifying, intimidating, joyless—and maybe impossible. Is it really that big a deal?

No!

Actually, yes. Your memoir is a big deal, because your life is a big deal. It’s your life! And publishing a “book of me” is pretty cool. Still, in the grander context of your life, writing a memoir should not feel like an overwhelming chore. Creating your narrative should be joyful, even cathartic.

You can do this.

Testimonials

“I wanted to thank you again for all your help with the book. My family loved it—and my Dad was so proud of it. Best was the way that my mother (who has dementia) wouldn’t put the book down and kept looking through it—these were memories she still had and could really enjoy. You had a huge role in producing something that is very meaningful to my whole family. Thank you.” — Dot Sandhaus

“I’m so grateful that I found Write My Memoirs. We didn’t know what to do with the disorganized transcriptions from my grandfather’s oral history. Now I can’t even imagine the joy that this book will bring to my family over the years! Thank you so much for all of the time, care and attention to detail that you have put into this book.” — Josh Wagner, grandson of author George Hammons

Have questions?

Meet Rosanne

I’m Rosanne Ullman, the owner of Write My Memoirs. When you arrange a call, you’ll speak with me. I’m also likely to be your coach and editor.

Why would you want to work with me?

I’m an excellent and accomplished writer and editor. As they say today, “That is all.” But that’s not all. I’m nice. You’ll enjoy working with me. I’m non-judgmental, and I never forget that this is your memoir, not mine. Your story will be in your voice, with your choice of content.

My Master’s Degree from Northwestern University’s esteemed Medill School of Journalism gave me a credential to pursue a long and deep career in professional writing and editing.

Here’s a list of links to some of my online articles.

My professional achievements also include:

  • Decades of reporting, writing and editing for and about the professional beauty industry.
  • 20 years of teaching a grammar and writing I designed for the New Trier eXtension adult
    education program outside of Chicago.
  • Current admin post for the popular Facebook group “Grammar Matters.”
  • Inclusion in the Summer 2002 issue of Meat for Tea the Valley Review, a literary and art magazine that chose my flash fiction piece—the only fiction I’ve ever sent out!

I fell in love with the art and craft of memoir in the early 2000s, when Write My Memoirs founder Sheldon Gray hired me to develop content for the website, which he created when he found no help online to write his own memoir. After working with me for a couple of years, Sheldon offered to bring me on as his business partner.

Unfortunately, Sheldon died in 2013. In his honor and his memory, I aim to continually improve Write My Memoirs. I watch his dream come to life every day as people write and publish their stories. When the memoir coaching, editing and publishing outpaces my schedule, I rely on a small circle of trusted professionals to help me help you.

We hope our website motivates you to write your story with joy. We’re here to help you every step of the way.

Then just set up a chapter and start writing your memoir. Don’t worry about rules. There are no rules to writing your memoir; there are only trends. These trends are based on techniques and features identified in current top-selling memoirs. At best, they’re the flavor of the month. If you’re capturing your life in print for your family, for your own gratification or to inspire readers, rather than aiming to set off Hollywood screenplay bidding wars, these trends don’t even apply to you. You’ll write the memoir that suits you best, and it will be timeless, not trend-driven.There are no rules, but there are four steps:

1. Theme/framework
2. Writing
3. Editing/polishing
4. Self-publishing

You’ve researched this, too, and you’ve been shocked at the price for getting help with any one of those steps, much less all four. That’s because most memoir sites promise to commercialize your work. They’ll follow a formula based on current memoir trends, because they want to convince you that they can turn your memoir into a best-seller. These sites overwhelm you with unnecessary information not to help you, the memoir author, but to address Search Engine Optimization (SEO) algorithms so they can sell more.

That’s not what we do at Write My Memoirs. Our small community of coaches, writers and editors are every bit as skilled as any you’ll find, and we charge appropriately for their expertise and the time they’ll spend helping you craft a compelling, enjoyable read. But you won’t pay an upcharge for that extra commercialization, the marketing that follows, and the pages of intimidating “advice.” You can sell your book if you like—we have ISBNs available for you—but our organic process of capturing your story takes a noncommercial path.

If you want help with any or all of the four steps above, choose from our services or save money by selecting one of our packages. SCHEDULE A CALL TODAY if you’d like to talk about what’s right for you. One year from now, you can be holding your published memoir in your hand. And at that point, it will be a big deal!
